220 Christian & Jewish Clergy Urge Arrest of Sudan’s President for Darfur War Crimes

News Release
November 20, 2009

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On the anniversary of the opening of the Nuremberg Trials of Nazi war criminals, 220 Christian and Jewish clergymembers have sent a petition to President Obama urging the U.S. to arrest the president of Sudan for his war crimes in Darfur.

Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir was indicted by the International Criminal Court earlier this year for his leading role in the Darfur genocide, but no government has tried to arrest him, even though he has openly traveled to numerous Arab and African countries in recent months.

The petition, which was sent to President Obama today [November 20, 2009], was organized by the Washington, DC-based David S. Wyman Institute for Holocaust Studies, and Christ Church Cathedral, in Cincinnati.

“As members of the clergy, we believe the United States and the entire Free World have a moral responsibility to capture and prosecute President Bashir,” the petition states. “This step would help end the Darfur genocide and deter future would-be perpetrators of genocide…[The U.S. should] take whatever steps are necessary to ensure that the Butcher of Darfur faces his own Nuremberg tribunal.”

“The anniversary of the Nuremberg Trials, when the perpetrators of the Holocaust were brought to justice, is a fitting occasion to urge meaningful U.S. action against the perpetrators of genocide today,” said the Dean of Christ Church Cathedral Cincinnati, the Very Rev. James A. Diamond, and Dr. Rafael Medoff, director of the Wyman Institute. “The U.S. and its allies have in the past proven they are capable of capturing fugitive war criminals, and we hope they will do so again now.”

The lead signatories on the petition are Rev. James A. Diamond, dean of Christ Church Cathedral; Father John T. Pawlikowski of Catholic Theological Union; Rabbi Irving (Yitz) Greenberg founding president of the Jewish Life Network and former chair of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council; and Rabbi Harold M. Schulweis, founder of Jewish World Watch.

Among the other notable signatories on the petition:

* Rev. Thomas E. Breidenthal, Bishop of Southern Ohio; Rev. Philip M. Duncan II, Bishop of the Central Gulf Coast; and Rev. Peter Morales, president of the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations.

* Rev. Dr. Wallace C. Smith, nationally known Baptist leader and pastor of the Shiloh Baptist Church, in Washington, DC; Rev. Michael J. Graham, president of Xavier University; and Father Albertus M. Herwanta, chair of the Carmelite Order’s General Commission for Justice & Peace.

* Rabbi Shirley Idelson, dean of Reform Judaism’s Hebrew Union College; three past presidents of the Central Conference of American (Reform) Rabbis, Rabbi Peter S. Knobel, Rabbi Charles Kroloff, and Rabbi Sheldon Zimmerman; and Rabbi Dan Ehrenkrantz, president of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College.

* Rabbi Jeffrey Wohlberg, president, and Rabbi Julie Schonfeld, executive vice president, of Conservative Judaism’s Rabbinical Assembly; Rabbi Daniel S. Nevins, dean of the Rabbinical School of Conservative Judaism’s Jewish Theological Seminary, and Rabbi Dr. David Golinkin, president of the Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies.

* Prominent leaders of Orthodox Judaism, including Rabbi Dr. Haskel Lookstein of Kehilath Jeshurun in New York City, and Rabbi Michael Schudrich, chief rabbi of Poland.

The Wyman Institute also sponsors the “Bashir Watch” project, which tracks tracks Bashir’s travels and encourages international action to arrest him. Other recent Wyman Institute efforts include a July 2009 letter by 100 Holocaust and genocide scholars to the government of Uganda, praising it for discouraging Bashir from attending a summit in Uganda; an August 2009 petition by 100 Jewish leaders to Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, when he visited the United States, challenging his decision to welcome Bashir to Egypt; and an October 2009 letter to President Obama by 119 rabbis, urging active U.S. intervention in Darfur.

The text of the November 20 letter to President Obama, and the complete list of signatories, follows below.

President Barack Obama
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Ave. NW
Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President,

On this 64th anniversary of the opening of the Nuremberg Trials, when the Allies brought to justice the war criminals responsible for World War II and the Holocaust, we are reminded that one of the world’s worst perpetrators of genocide remains free.

More than eight months ago, Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir was indicted by the International Criminal Court for “war crimes” and “crimes against humanity,” involving “intentionally directing attacks against an important part of the civilian population of Darfur, Sudan, murdering, exterminating, raping, torturing, and forcibly transferring large numbers of civilians, and pillaging their property.”

President Bashir has recently visited numerous Arab and African countries, including major recipients of U.S. aid such as Egypt and Saudi Arabia, yet no action has been taken to arrest him.

As members of the clergy, we believe the United States and the entire Free World have a moral responsibility to capture and prosecute President Bashir. This step would help end the Darfur genocide and deter future would-be perpetrators of genocide.

Mr. President, the Nuremberg Trials showed us the way. Let us heed that example and take whatever steps are necessary to ensure that the Butcher of Darfur faces his own Nuremberg tribunal.
